Yay for BfS!

Bowling for Soup.  Do you know them?  You should.  If you don't, go meet them now.  They're on their "Get Happy Tour" with three other bands, and thanks to the fabulous [profile] devinam, she, NordicBoy, and I went to the concert last night.  The first of the three lead-in bands, Army of Freshman, were energetic and fun.  If only I could have understood their lyrics.  ::sigh::  What is it with singers and crappy diction?  Do they not want their lyics understood?  Still, I plan to look them up because their sound was cool enough to warrant more research.  The other two bands, Punchline and Lucky Boys Confusion, were okay.  I liked their songs better when BfS sang bits of them.  Punchline's lead singer looked like Joel Hodgson from very early MST3K.  That was cool.  The lead singer of Lucky Boys Confusion was flat as often as he was on key.  That was bad.  Maybe his voice was just really tired; it's the beginning of the ninth and final week of the tour, after all.  However, their lead guitarist was outstanding.  I found myself wondering why he was wasting his time with them and not playing fill-in lead guitar on tour with some big-name band.  There's a market for that, you know.

On to Bowling for Soup!  I love these guys, and seeing them in such a small venue (which wasn't even packed! Crazy!) was a treat and then some.  They sang some faves and some new tunes off the album that's due out in early November.  Now to figure out how to keep Nordic Boy from buying it before Christmas...  Anyway, they were energetic, fun, brilliant, funny--basically a great live show. :D  The lead singer Jaret has the best diction of any rock star out there, and it doesn't suffer when performing live.  I love him for this.  The band's lyrics are so brilliant, but without him you'd never know it, eh?

And can I just say I never thought that a man who is undoubtedly pushing 300 pounds could ever be described as dainty, but...well...Chris...yeah.  Fluid in movement; dainty and graceful with his guitar, and yet...

Go figure.  ::shrug::

I was also very pleasantly surpised by the venue.  I'd been there a couple of years ago, before it changed name and ownership, and before the statewide no smoking law.  It is so much better now!  They place is still sorely lacking in ventilation, but at least they've painted the walls dark blue (instead of the beaten-up, scuffed black they were previously) and magically gotten the smoke stink out of the place.  The Nag Champa incense they were burning part of the time was a nice touch, too.  Colour me thrilled!  And on top of all of that, the numerous security people were all very pleasant.  Firm but friendly, you know?  Really awsome, and helped make the experience that much better.  Right on! for the folks at El Corazon!  However, I have to say that you need to TURN DOWN THE MUSIC.  When the volume is so high that there's static distortion in the high band, IT'S TOO FREAKING LOUD.  Fortunately, I had ear plugs.  I came away happy, and neither hoarse nor deafened.  Huzzah!

All in all, one hella successful evening!  :D  Thanks, [profile] devinam!
