...high on the list is that he makes me laugh and he makes me think. Here's how he did both today (and bear in mind this isn't the first time he's done this since moving to NYC 15 years ago. not-so-seekrit message to Karl: COME HOME NOW.). He's taking a new acting class with a big name coach and he's having trouble. So what does he do? He calls me for help. LOL! Come on, make my ego grow some more. ;) Thing is, when it's for him, I am a damned good acting coach. It helps that we studied together when we were mid-teens and were in the same uni program for one year, so we share some background but not too much. Plus, he knows himself as an actor, and so he asks the right questions. He asks things that I have to think about in order to answer, and those things lead him to new ideas and revelations. He takes notes and applies what I suggest in order to find what works for him. Basically, I give him new tools to keep in his toolbox. Gods, I hope it goes over well at his next class this coming week. LOL. I've told him to let me know. What was it he found so quotable today? Lemme see... "I had to find the power in her." and something like "I look at the words to tell me who the character is, and once I know that, I know how to play the character." Sounds pretentious as all shit on the page, doesn't it? ;) But it works--at least for me who is a very verbal/word-based actor. Him...I told him to find the physical first. He's a dancer; that's his core knowledge. And yes, I suggested ways to go about that. See? For Karl, I'm good. Anyone else...::shrug:: Couldn't say, but certainly not as good.
