"There's a trench in the garage," NordicBoy said.

"That's good, since that's what they're supposed to be doing," I replied. "Otherwise I'd have to wonder what all that jackhammering was about."

Yes, there's nothing quite like being forced by circumstances into home improvement...on a Saturday...when it's raining.  Let me begin with this morning.

[personal profile] jaunthie and I had a successful trip to the Goodwill Glitter Sale, each coming home with a fabulous dress and more.  I arrived home to learn that, for an estimated $3,000 less than the original estimate, we could get a whole lot more for our money.  So when the work is done (supposedly by then end of this coming week) we will have:
  • a new laundry tub
  • laundry drainage that adheres to current codes
  • new  pipes to and from the hot water tank and the aforementioned laundry facilities
  • new sewer pipes out to the street
  • and (this it the best bit) a half bath in the basement  (Squee!)
Not the way one wants to go about these things, but they are things that needed doing anyway so one really must just roll with it.  So we are.  While the fabulous guys from Southwest Plumbing went to get the jackhammer, NordicBoy and I moved everything to one side of the garage or elsewhere entirely.  We hauled things that need to go to the dump out to one side of the driveway.  I even raked up soggy leaves.  (I was already wet, so what the hell?)  The basement is insane right now, but an orderly sort of insane.  (I've always been good at those games where you have one sqaure open and have to move all the others one by one to get them in the right order.)  We'll have to rearrage again in a couple of days when they're done outside and have to move into the basement proper.  We'll deal with that when we have to.  Meantime, what colour shall we paint the soon-to-be new WC, I wonder?  Off-white probably, but that's so dull.  We'll see...  NordicBoy was wanting to paint that nook anyway, only now it'll be a room rather than a nook.  I wonder where we'll hang our snowshoes after this?  Hrm...

Once it's all back together I'm hoping to be able to get rid of the old rug, paint the rest of the basement, and get something else to go on the floor.  I'm thinking a floating subfloor is a good place to start, don't you think?  Followed by a new carpet and a fireplace insert.  (Yeah, dream on, you crack-smoking monkey.  ...  But it's such a nice dream...)
