We rode the SLUT!
Dec. 20th, 2007 03:50 pmCaught your eye, no? Okay, so shortly after naming the South Lake Union Trolley, someone noticed that the abbreviation was SLUT. Because bureaucrats are universally lacking in humour they promptly changed it to South Lake Union Streetcar, but not before an enterprising coffee shop along the line had t-shirts made and the name got out to the public. So, they can call it what they want, but to people who appreciate comedy it is and ever will be the SLUT. And in our annual evening out downtown last night, NordicBoy and I rode it two stops from where we parked to Westlake. Nice ride. Smooth. And until January, free. :D Makes this town feel like a grown-up city at last. My man is so European considering he's from Small City, USA. He was positively gleeful over the SLUT.
Next we rode the holiday carousel. This is always a treat. It's an old, classic carousel with pretty, pretty horses on it and I love it. We got an extra long ride, too, because there was no one waiting in line. Whee!
From there it was a bit of shopping--mostly looking, a little buying. Did you know there's a wine shop and wine bar at Pacific Place? I do now.
Then we popped into Oliver's bar for martinis - Paradigm Shift they were called. I don't usually go for things with gin, but it was too tempting and turned out to be so worth it! Delicious!
Finally we went to the Dahlia Lounge for our magnificent dinner. First, they brought an amuse-bouche of what I can only call the shmanciest pb&j ever created. I felt very Iron Chef. Next were veggie pakoras with three sauces for dipping--a yummy chutney; a yougurt sauce; and an avacado sauce. All were very good, but I wanted to take some of that chutney home in a big vat. Oh yes.
There is a reason that Tom Douglas beat Iron Chef Morimoto in that salmon battle, so how could I not go with the salmon, right? It came atop roasted parsnips and brussels sprouts and was topped with a perfect little slice of bacon. (Clearly it was a night for consuming things I usually don't because even the sprouts couldn't deter me from ordering this dish.) Exquisite. The salmon was rich, flavorful, and perfectly cooked. The flavors of the veggies and bacon blended delightfully. NordicBoy went for the duck--since he's never getting that cooked at home. I can't tell you how it was, only that he seemed to enjoy it quite thoroughly. (We need to go to Wild Ginger more often so he can have the duck appetizer.) He had the pinot gris and I went for the riesling. Both were most lovely. And we had just enough room left for dessert: triple coconut cream pie and a hot spiced pumpkin. The first was, as you would expect, pie. The second, which you wouldn't expect without seeing the menu, was a drink involving Captain Morgan's Spiced Rum, a housemade pumpkin mix, and some of the heaviest of heavy whipping cream ever. It was beyond happy-making for a pumpkin freak like me. :D Mmmmmmmmm...pumpkin!
And now I'm trying to figure out what to eat tonight before going to Renton for the show. It will only pale in comparison, whatever it is. But, as the Mama-san says, "It will sustain life."
