Our opponents claim to have 75,000 signatures towards their goal of 120,555 to place referendum 71 on the ballot. They are spreading myths about our families to win support.

The Truth Behind Referendum 71

Myth 1) Domestic Partnerships are marriage.
Truth 1) Domestic Partnerships are not marriage. In fact people with domestic partnerships do not have access to over 1000 federal rights married opposite sex couples enjoy.

Myth 2) Domestic Partnerships are bad for children.
Truth 2) Domestic Partnerships are very good for children. They guarantee financial stability during tragic circumstances such as the death of a parent, family sick leave, and allow a child to be protected under both parent's health insurance should one lose their job.

Myth 3) Domestic Partnerships will hurt Washington families.
Truth 3) Over 5000 families are protected by domestic partnerships, including some heterosexual senior citizens

Those trying to place Referendum 71 on the ballot are working hard to perpetuate these myths. They say that protection for all Washington families somehow harms marriage. They are wrong. If they succeed, thousands of Washington families will lose equal protection under state law. Please decline to sign Referendum 71, to ensure that ALL Washington families and our children obtain equal protections and rights under the law.
