They had one last shot to make a main Trek character gay, and they didn't.  The only main character (and I use the term loosely considering how he's been so cheated script and screen-wise) on ENT whom we've not seen paired up with anyone else in a romantic/sexual situation is Travis Mayweather.  Now, in the production report for the ep Demons, we see the following:  "LeVar Burton started on Demons ... doing scenes involving Anthony Montgomery as 'Travis Mayweather' and an old flame who is a reporter at the conference, played by Johanna Watts.' They couldn't have made the 'old flame' a man. Oh no.  That's just too risky and controversial.

Ummm...  Aren't "risky" and "controversial" two of the watchwords of Classic Star Trek?

Okay, I know they'd have caught shit from the fans both against and for a gay Trek character.  The "against" are obvious--they're narrowminded fuckwads who don't appreciate human dignity and diversity.  The "for" would have bitched because it would be a too-little-too-late situation.  I admit I'd have felt a bit of that, but I'd also be so thrilled that they finally had the balls to do it that I would have forgiven them for their last-second nod to the multitude of queer and queer-friendly fans out there.

Cowards.  I hope when they meet Gene Roddenberry in the afterlife that he rips them all new assholes.

ETA: Couldn't make the whole lj-cut thing work, so I put the warning in the subject. Maybe next time I'll be able to figure the damned thing out, but right now I just don't have time to spend. Apologies!
