Illness and Showness
Oct. 24th, 2008 02:51 pmStill sick. No better, no worse. I have no faith that the Zicam chewtabs are doing anything at all. I love my Odwallas, but even they are only allowing me to hold my own against this fucking cold. I really need a 24-hour period where I can do nothing but rest and recover, but that ain't happening until Monday. *sigh* See, it's been tech week all week because...it's opening night tonight. Normally that would make me go all "Whee!" and "Huzzah!" Too sick for that, sadly. It still wouldn't be so bad, seeing as I'm featured ensemble, not a principal (thank gods!), but the director (bless his pointed little head, as my friend LynneBooks used to say) has me out clowning in the audience before the show. Much of the cast is shmoozing, but Durdles and I are clowning. My problem? (Aside from the fact that I am sick as the proverbial dog and that I am an actor because I don't like people, I mean.) My problem: I HATE INTERACTIVE CLOWNS! Rather than finding them charming and funny, I find them intrusive and off-putting. I find them irritating. I find them annoying. There is nothing, as an audience member, that shuts me off quicker than some clown invading my personal space. Just. Fucking. Hate. It. Put this f*ing cold on top of it all, and two extra costume changes because of the clown schtick, and I am not a happy camper. I keep telling myself it's only ten minutes a night for only eleven nights. Then the bitter, coughing, headachey, exhasuted, clown-hating part of me points out that that equals nearly two hours of my life spent doing something I passionately do not want to do. I'd work with this director -- indeed with the entire show staff and cast -- again in a heartbeat, but it would be understood from the beginning that I do not "work the audience".
Oh and that THERE WILL BE NO CLOWNS.
Oh and that THERE WILL BE NO CLOWNS.

Date: 2008-10-24 10:52 pm (UTC)Will you be there tonight? I'd be safe "clowing" with you. I think my other problem comes from not being able to make that snap judgment of who will/won't take well to being messed with. Hartley seems to have the knack; I do not.
Feel better!
